Whaea Miranda Kini – Kaiako (Room 7 )
Mai i te tauihu ko Moehau
Tae noa ki te taurapa ko Te Aroha
Ngā puke ki Hauraki ka tārehua
The seeds of Te Kawenga were sown by parents who saw the benefits of their children continuing their learning in Mātauranga Māori /Māori education beyond those critical first years in Te Kōhanga Reo.
In 1990 supported by our Kaumatua an agreement to establish Te Kawenga was reached between whānau of Te Kōhanga Reo o Te Tonga o Hoterini and Thames South School Board of Trustees. The aspirations of the Whānau were realised with the opening of Te Kawenga in 1994. Twenty years later Te Kawenga remains solid and strong and a place where children continue their education in the medium of Te Reo Māori.
Ko tōu reo, ko tōku reo,
te tuakiri tangata.
Tīhei uriuri, tīhei nakonako.
Your voice and my voice are expressions of identity.
May our descendants live on and our hopes be fulfilled.
